The bus is the cheapest option to get from Monteverde to San Jose, with tickets costing $3. This makes it a popular choice for locals and backpackers.
But here's the catch: buses make a lot of stops to pick up and drop off passengers, so the trip can take 4h or even longer. Plus, buses in Costa Rica are prone to petty thieves!
Still, the price is unbeatable. And if you're on a budget, you will want to be on one of the two daily bus trips to San Jose from Monteverde. Operated by TransMonteverde, these buses leave at 05:30 and 14:30 every day.
The arrival station is at Terminal Atlantico Norte in San Jose city centre.
Attention: Terminal 7-10 closed in April 2025. Transmonteverde used to arrive at San José’s Terminal 7-10. This was the main hub for buses from Cóbano, Monteverde, San Carlos, Jacó, and even international routes from Nicaragua and El Salvador.

It might seem like minivans take longer than the bus because of all the pickups and drop-offs, but they're actually faster overall because they make fewer stops. They're also safer when it comes to pickpockets.
You can choose from eleven minivan companies operating from Monteverde to San Jose.

Within the city, you can check out the colonial buildings turned museums at Barrio Amon, try out the famed restaurants at Barrio Escalante, or party the night away in El Pueblo. Used the Songserm ferry from Koh Samui. Cheaper than Lomprayah but takes a bit longer. Still a perfectly fine crossing. The views approaching Koh Tao are stunning either way.

Train via Surat Thani was our pick. More scenic than Chumphon route and the Lomprayah catamaran from Tapee Pier is very comfortable. Book the special express train for the quickest ride.
The overnight bus with Montanatip was okay but not great. The bus was older and the seats didn't recline much. Ferry portion was fine though. If you're on a tight budget it works.
Took the sleeper train to Chumphon — magical! Woke up to palm trees and transferred to the Lomprayah catamaran. Whole journey felt like an adventure.
Lomprayah bus+ferry combo from Khao San Road was seamless. Departed at 6am, arrived Koh Tao by 3pm. Well organized.
Flew to Koh Samui and took Lomprayah catamaran. More expensive but saved a full day. Worth it if your holiday is short.
