The cheapest option to travel from Dubrovnik to Makarska is by bus.
There are three bus companies running this route year-round: Autotrans by Arriva, Promet Makarska and Nomago.
Ticket prices start from $22, and the journey takes around 2h 40m - 6h 25m.
Just a heads-up: you might need to pay a small fee per suitcase, usually in cash when boarding.
During the high season, the ferry is a great alternative to get from Dubrovnik to Makarska.
Krilo (Kapetan Luka) is the only ferry sailing on this route. They offer one trip daily from June to September.
Although a ferry ride is double the price of the bus, it’s a nice way to combine transport with sightseeing. The coastal views from the ferry are truly amazing!
A ticket costs $56 for the ferry ride that is 3h 55m long.
Both ports are within the city centre, where most hotels and restaurants are located.
A private transfer is a convenient option when travelling in a group from Dubrovnik to Makarska.
Rates start from $309 for a -seater private transfer — quite expensive for a small group. But if you're travelling in a large group, private minivans are available and can be more economical if you divide the cost per person.

Used the Songserm ferry from Koh Samui. Cheaper than Lomprayah but takes a bit longer. Still a perfectly fine crossing. The views approaching Koh Tao are stunning either way.

Train via Surat Thani was our pick. More scenic than Chumphon route and the Lomprayah catamaran from Tapee Pier is very comfortable. Book the special express train for the quickest ride.
The overnight bus with Montanatip was okay but not great. The bus was older and the seats didn't recline much. Ferry portion was fine though. If you're on a tight budget it works.
Took the sleeper train to Chumphon — magical! Woke up to palm trees and transferred to the Lomprayah catamaran. Whole journey felt like an adventure.
Lomprayah bus+ferry combo from Khao San Road was seamless. Departed at 6am, arrived Koh Tao by 3pm. Well organized.
Flew to Koh Samui and took Lomprayah catamaran. More expensive but saved a full day. Worth it if your holiday is short.
