The fastest way to reach Batu Karas from Jakarta is by flight. The nearest airport from Batu Karas is in Cijulang, located just 10 km away.
Note that the flights on this route are not available every day, so this may dictate whether this option can work for you.
The flight itself takes only an hour, and the ride to Batu Karas is about 30 minutes by motorcycle taxi. This option is the most expensive, with total fares starting from $1.
It’s possible to travel from Jakarta to Batu Karas by bus. You can take the direct but more expensive bus to Batu Karas.
Alternatively, you can take the indirect but cheaper bus up to Pangandaran. In this town, minibuses and ojeks are available to take you to Batu Karas.
As a heads up, buses for this route are nowhere near as comfortable as the train. We don’t really recommend taking them for such a long journey.
Still, the bus is the cheapest option and might be worth the few dollars you save.
There is no direct train from Jakarta to Batu Karas. You can take the train only up to Banjar Station, 60 km away from Batu Karas.
In Banjar, there are buses that can take you to Cijulang, the town nearest to Batu Karas. From here, Batu Karas is just a 30-minute ojek (motorcycle taxi) ride away.
Total travel time takes about 10.5 to 11 hours, with fares starting from 75,000 IDR.

Used the Songserm ferry from Koh Samui. Cheaper than Lomprayah but takes a bit longer. Still a perfectly fine crossing. The views approaching Koh Tao are stunning either way.

Train via Surat Thani was our pick. More scenic than Chumphon route and the Lomprayah catamaran from Tapee Pier is very comfortable. Book the special express train for the quickest ride.
The overnight bus with Montanatip was okay but not great. The bus was older and the seats didn't recline much. Ferry portion was fine though. If you're on a tight budget it works.
Took the sleeper train to Chumphon — magical! Woke up to palm trees and transferred to the Lomprayah catamaran. Whole journey felt like an adventure.
Lomprayah bus+ferry combo from Khao San Road was seamless. Departed at 6am, arrived Koh Tao by 3pm. Well organized.
Flew to Koh Samui and took Lomprayah catamaran. More expensive but saved a full day. Worth it if your holiday is short.
Most travelers base themselves near the main beach for easy access to transport, restaurants, and activities.
