Kuala Lumpur (KL) is the vibrant capital of Malaysia. It is probably most popular for the iconic Petronas Towers and KL Tower, but this fast-growing city boasts of a lot of other attractions that stand closer to the ground. One example is the old KL Railway Station, a beautiful mix of Malay Islamic and European architecture. For a burst of colour, visit Batu Caves, located about 10 km away from KL city centre.
Shopping is also a favourite activity - from the high-end finds at Bukit Bintang to the souvenirs sold in Chinatown. Whatever you do, make sure to allot some time for the hawker haven at Jalan Alor.
Although it is not a direct option, the bus is the cheapest way to get from Taman Negara to Kuala Lumpur. Combined fares start from 20 MYR. Excluding transfer time, the journey takes about 5 hours.
Alternatively, you can take a combined minivan and longboat journey. Travel time takes about 7.5 hours, but it is a very scenic journey.
Travelling with a small group from Taman Negara to Kuala Lumpur? The taxi is the fastest option at only 4 hours. However, it is also quite expensive, with rates from 470 MYR.
There is also a train option from Taman Negara to Kuala Lumpur, but we don't recommend it as it involves several transfers. The train requires you to depart from Taman Negara in the middle of the night, so you won't be getting much sleep!

Han Travel organises combined boat and minivan transfers from Taman Negara to Kuala Lumpur. It’s not exactly a direct option, but at least you won’t have to worry about your connecting ride.
From Taman Negara, you will take a 3-hour longboat ride to Kuala Tembeling and then hop on your connecting minivan (or bus during busy season) bound for Kuala Lumpur.
A note for the longboat ride: make sure your electricals are packed away safely as the boat’s roof doesn’t protect you if there’s heavy rain.
Combined tickets for the Taman Negara to Kuala Lumpur journey cost $20 and travel time is 5h - 7h 30m when you book via BookAway. The minivan parks at the Han Travel office in Bangunan Mariamman, Kuala Lumpur city centre.
If you don’t mind spending more for a private trip, you can also take a taxi from Taman Negara to Kuala Lumpur. As this is a long-distance trip, it might be best to ask your guesthouse for driver recommendations.
Rates start from for the trip that is long.
ABOUT YOUR DESTINATION
Kuala Lumpur (KL) is Malaysia’s capital, a vibrant mix of skyscrapers, Asian-European architecture, large shopping districts, and flavourful cuisine. The busy city can be quite overwhelming, but it’s all about finding your rhythm in Kuala Lumpur's beautiful chaos.
The Petronas Towers — the tallest twin towers in the world — are the city's most iconic attraction. But there's so much more to see in Kuala Lumpur. The old KL Railway Station, KL Tower, Bukit Bintang, and Jalan Alor are all must-visits. And if you have more time, the colourful Batu Caves is just 30 minutes away from the city.

Used the Songserm ferry from Koh Samui. Cheaper than Lomprayah but takes a bit longer. Still a perfectly fine crossing. The views approaching Koh Tao are stunning either way.

Train via Surat Thani was our pick. More scenic than Chumphon route and the Lomprayah catamaran from Tapee Pier is very comfortable. Book the special express train for the quickest ride.
The overnight bus with Montanatip was okay but not great. The bus was older and the seats didn't recline much. Ferry portion was fine though. If you're on a tight budget it works.
Took the sleeper train to Chumphon — magical! Woke up to palm trees and transferred to the Lomprayah catamaran. Whole journey felt like an adventure.
Lomprayah bus+ferry combo from Khao San Road was seamless. Departed at 6am, arrived Koh Tao by 3pm. Well organized.
Flew to Koh Samui and took Lomprayah catamaran. More expensive but saved a full day. Worth it if your holiday is short.
