If you’re travelling solo or with just one other person, it’s best to take a minivan from Da Nang to Hoi An to Hoi An or vice versa. Rates start from $155 for the 45m journey.
Book your minivan ride beforehand so that you won’t have to worry about it on the day of your trip. Keep in mind that van departures are once every hour or every 2 hours. Pick a schedule that’s closest to your train arrival/departure.
If the minivan schedules are too inconvenient for you, you can instead book a private transfer.
In Hoi An, Barri Ann Travel and Hoi An Express share a terminal at Phuong Min Anh, just within walking distance of the Old Town. iHome Transfer picks up and drops off passengers at La Siesta Hoi An Resort & Spa, about 1.5 km east of the town centre.
An easier but more expensive way to get from Da Nang to Hoi An to Hoi An is by taxi. With this option, you won’t have to worry about finding your way to and from bus stations.
Travelling by taxi takes around 1h. Fares start from $11 for a 2-seater car.
You can hail a taxi from just outside the train station or you can book one in advance via BookAway.
The local bus used to be the cheapest option when travelling between Da Nang and Hoi An. But the last time we checked (November 2024), this is no longer available.
Some travellers still try to look for these local buses, though. Unfortunately, there are drivers who try to take advantage of this by offering overpriced taxis. This is why we highly advise that you book a minivan or private transfer beforehand (see the above sections for more info).
If any driver tries to approach you at the train station, you can tell them you already booked a ride and head straight to your meet-up point.
Once outside the train station, turn left and walk until you reach the corner, and then turn right. Walk straight for a few minutes until you reach the main road and then turn left. From here, it’s a 500 m walk to the bus stop.

ABOUT YOUR DESTINATION
Hoi An is a charming city on Vietnam's central coast. Once a major port, the mixed influences of Japanese, Chinese, and European merchants are still visible here.
Its Old Town is a well-preserved fusion of foreign and indigenous architecture, laid out in a small-scale model of a 15th to 19th-century trading hub. No wonder it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site! Travelling to Hoi An feels like walking back in time.

Used the Songserm ferry from Koh Samui. Cheaper than Lomprayah but takes a bit longer. Still a perfectly fine crossing. The views approaching Koh Tao are stunning either way.

Train via Surat Thani was our pick. More scenic than Chumphon route and the Lomprayah catamaran from Tapee Pier is very comfortable. Book the special express train for the quickest ride.
The overnight bus with Montanatip was okay but not great. The bus was older and the seats didn't recline much. Ferry portion was fine though. If you're on a tight budget it works.
Took the sleeper train to Chumphon — magical! Woke up to palm trees and transferred to the Lomprayah catamaran. Whole journey felt like an adventure.
Lomprayah bus+ferry combo from Khao San Road was seamless. Departed at 6am, arrived Koh Tao by 3pm. Well organized.
Flew to Koh Samui and took Lomprayah catamaran. More expensive but saved a full day. Worth it if your holiday is short.
