San Jose to Monteverde by Bus

4hFrom 3,890 CRC ($8.50)

On a budget? A public bus is a popular option with locals and backpackers because it is the cheapest way to get from San Jose to Monteverde. A ticket costs only 3,890 CRC ($8.50).

It’s worth noting that because of traffic and its many stops, the bus can be the slowest option. Travel time from San Jose to Monteverde takes around 4h or more.

Transmonteverde is the only bus company operating on this route. It offers two daily departures at 06:30 and 14:30.

We highly recommend booking online because tickets sell out fast. You can do that through the Transmonteverde website, although it's not always reliable for foreigners. It is easier to buy your tickets through BookAway, but expect higher prices.

Departure and arrival station

Transmonteverde leaves from Terminal Atlantico Norte in San Jose city centre. It parks at Transmonteverde Bus Station in Santa Elena, the gateway to Monteverde.

Attention: Terminal 7-10 closed in April 2025. Transmonteverde used to depart from San José’s Terminal 7-10. This was the main hub for buses to Cóbano, Monteverde, San Carlos, Jacó, and even international routes to Nicaragua and El Salvador.
