Gecko Routes is operated by Manta Vision Labs. Our website address is https://www.geckoroutes.com. We provide travel route information, guides, and booking links to help travelers plan overland journeys across Southeast Asia and beyond.

What data we collect

Analytics data

We collect anonymous usage data through Plausible Analytics, a privacy-focused analytics tool hosted on our own servers (not a third-party cloud). Plausible does not use cookies and does not collect personal data. It helps us understand which routes and guides are most popular so we can prioritise content.

We also use PostHog (EU-hosted instance) for product analytics to understand how visitors interact with our site. PostHog may collect anonymised interaction data such as page views, clicks, and scroll depth. This data is processed in the European Union.

Error monitoring

We use Sentry to detect and fix technical errors. When an error occurs on the site, Sentry may collect technical information such as your browser type, operating system, the page URL, and the error details. This data is used solely to improve site reliability and is not used for marketing.

Contact information

If you contact us via our contact form, we collect your name, email address, and message content to respond to your inquiry. We do not share this information with third parties.

Comments and community contributions

If you leave a comment, route update, or travel tip on our site, we collect the display name you provide and the content of your submission. We do not require an account or email address to leave a comment, but if you choose to provide one, it will only be used to notify you of replies.

IP addresses

Our hosting infrastructure may log IP addresses for security purposes (e.g., preventing abuse, DDoS protection). These logs are retained for a limited period and are not used for tracking or advertising.

Cookies

Gecko Routes uses a minimal number of cookies. When you first visit the site, a cookie consent banner gives you the choice to accept or manage cookies.

Third-party services

We use the following third-party services to operate and improve Gecko Routes:

  • Plausible Analytics — privacy-focused, cookie-free website analytics (self-hosted)
  • PostHog — product analytics for understanding site usage (EU-hosted)
  • Sentry — error monitoring and performance tracking
  • Mapbox — interactive maps on route pages (Mapbox may collect usage data per their privacy policy)
  • Cloudflare — DNS, CDN, and security protection
  • Hetzner — server hosting (EU-based)
  • Bookaway, Booking.com, Skyscanner, 12Go Asia — affiliate booking partners (visited only when you click an outbound link)

Data retention

We retain different types of data for different periods:

  • Analytics data — Plausible retains aggregated, anonymous data indefinitely (no personal data is stored). PostHog data is retained per their EU data retention policies.
  • Error logs (Sentry) — retained for 90 days, then automatically deleted.
  • Contact form messages — retained for as long as needed to respond to your inquiry, then deleted within 12 months.
  • Comments and tips — retained for as long as the associated route guide is published. You can request removal at any time.
  • Server logs (IP addresses) — retained for up to 30 days for security purposes.

Data sharing and selling

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties. We do not run advertising on Gecko Routes. Data is shared only with the third-party services listed above, solely for the purposes described in this policy.

International data transfers

Our servers are hosted in the European Union (Hetzner, Germany). Analytics data processed by PostHog is also hosted in the EU. Some services (Sentry, Mapbox, Cloudflare) may process data in the United States under appropriate data protection agreements.

Your rights

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and similar laws, you have the right to:

  • Request access to any personal data we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate data
  • Request deletion of your data
  • Object to or restrict processing of your data
  • Request a copy of your data in a portable format
  • Withdraw consent at any time (e.g., by clearing cookies or contacting us)

Children's privacy

Gecko Routes is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.
