Jakarta to Batu Karas by Bus

It’s possible to travel from Jakarta to Batu Karas by bus. You can take the direct but more expensive bus to Batu Karas.

Alternatively, you can take the indirect but cheaper bus up to Pangandaran. In this town, minibuses and ojeks are available to take you to Batu Karas.

As a heads up, buses for this route are nowhere near as comfortable as the train. We don’t really recommend taking them for such a long journey.

Still, the bus is the cheapest option and might be worth the few dollars you save.

Option 1: Direct Bus from Jakarta to Batu Karas

Jayanti Tour dan Travel is a 7-seater bus offering door-to-door transfers from Jakarta to Batu Karas. Travel time is about 10h to your hotel in Batu Karas.

Tickets are quite pricey at 500,000 IDR ($29), but it’s the only direct option available from Jakarta to Batu Karas. It’s worth your money if you want a comfortable trip instead of worrying about bus transfers.

Option 2: Indirect Bus via Pangandaran

The cheaper option is to take a bus from Jakarta to Pangandaran first. From Pangandaran, you can take another minibus or an ojek to Batu Karas.

Step 1: Jakarta to Pangandaran by Bus

Local buses bound for Pangandaran depart from Kampung Rambutan Bus Terminal in Jakarta city centre. You can choose between aircon and non-aircon buses on this route. For the small difference in price, it’s worth treating yourself to some aircon for a bit of comfort.

Bus tickets cost 100,000 IDR ($5.80) and buses depart every hour from 06:30 to 18:30. The local buses arrive at Pangandaran Bus Terminal after around 10 hours.

Executive shuttles are also available from Jakarta to Pangandaran. Chall Jaya and Jayanti Tour are both 7-seater shuttles offering hotel pick-up and drop-off in Jakarta and Pangandaran city centres. Fares start from 370,000 IDR ($22) for the 10-hour ride.

Step 2: Pangandaran to Batu Karas

At Pangandaran Bus Terminal, look for the blue minivans bound for Cijulang. A seat costs only 10,000 IDR ($0.60) for the 1 hour journey. In Cijulang, take an ojek to Batu Karas for about 50,000 IDR ($2.90).

If you prefer a direct transfer from Pangandaran to Batu Karas, you can take an ojek or taxi. Fares start from 100,000 IDR ($5.80) and 250,000 IDR ($15), respectively.

Jakarta to Batu Karas by Train

There is no direct train from Jakarta to Batu Karas. You can take the train only up to Banjar Station, 60 km away from Batu Karas.

In Banjar, there are buses that can take you to Cijulang, the town nearest to Batu Karas. From here, Batu Karas is just a 30-minute ojek (motorcycle taxi) ride away.

Total travel time takes about 10.5 to 11 hours, with fares starting from 75,000 IDR ($4.40).

If you take the night train that arrives at Banjar at 04:25, you still have about 2 hours of waiting time until the first bus trip to Cijulang. With the 09:30 trip, you’ll be able to catch the last bus of the day, but you’ll arrive at Batu Karas late at night.

Step 2: Banjar to Cijulang by Bus

From Banjar, you can take the bus to Cijulang, the town nearest to Batu Karas. Budiman and Sonny Prima buses both originate from Tasikmalaya, pick up passengers in Banjar and Pangandaran, and then head to Cijulang.

The first trip departs Tasikmalaya at 06:00 and there are buses available every one to two hours until 19:00.

You can board the bus at Banjar Bus Terminal, about 3 km from the train station. It’s also possible to hail the bus on the street near the train station.

Fares for a non-airconditioned bus from Banjar to Cijulang start from 60,000 IDR ($3.50) for the bus ride that takes around 2.5 hours.

Alternative option: Banjar to Batu Karas via Pangandaran

It’s also possible to split the journey at Pangandaran. If you don’t have a surfboard or heavy luggage, you can get off at Pangandaran and directly take an ojek from Pangandaran to Batu Karas.

Fares start from 100,000 IDR ($5.80). You might also encounter taxi drivers offering you rides to Batu Karas.

Step 3: Cijulang to Batu Karas by Motorcycle Taxi

Flights from Jakarta to Cijulang run only three to four times a week, usually on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

The plane on this route is a small 12-seater aircraft, so seats can sell out fast. Keep in mind also that if your luggage weighs over 10 kg or if you’re taking a surfboard with you, you’ll have to pay an extra fee.

Step 2: Cijulang to Batu Karas by Motorcycle
