Kandy to Negombo by Bus

From Kandy Good Shed Bus Station, take bus #1/245 to Negombo. We recommend that you take an air-conditioned bus for a little more comfort. A ticket costs $2.40 (820 LKR) and the travel time is about 4 hours.

You’ll also find regular buses for about $1.30 (450 LKR), but they’re not the best option for a trip this long. They’re less comfortable, don’t have air conditioning, make more stops, and usually take longer to reach Kandy.

Kandy to Negombo by Train

*Important update: As of July 2026, the Kandy railway line is still closed following the Cyclone Ditwah damage of November 2025. Trains from Kandy toward Colombo are not running yet (reconnection expected around late 2026). For now, take the bus or a car/taxi for the Kandy leg.

There are no direct trains from Kandy to Negombo. First, take a train to Gampaha, then continue to Negombo by taxi or tuk-tuk.
