What ferry routes do you recommend for my multi-island itinerary?
Cor · April 2023
Hello Maarten, In September this year we want to plan a trip to Bali; the tickets are already booked. We first want to stay a few days on Bali (Sanur/Umud) and then travel on by (fast) boat to Gili Trawangan. Then on by boat to Lombok and Selong Belanak (Taxi), to go to Nusa Penida a day later and then back to Bali. Which (fast) boat routes would you advise us from Central Bali to Gili and from Lombok to Nusa Penida? Is it easy to get a taxi on Lombok, and does this also work via the Blue bird app? Roughly how long does the journey by boat/taxi from Gili to Selong Belanak take? Thanks in advance.

Hi Cor, that sounds like a fantastic trip. The islands are absolutely a must and Selong Belanak and the surrounding beaches are beautiful too. Beyond that, the planning sounds very good.

Here are all the tips at a glance:
1. Take the Eka Jaya ferry from Padang Bai to the Gili islands (geckoroutes.com).
2. Take the local boat from the Gili islands to Bangsal Pier (10-20m). I've heard that if you walk away from the harbour, you can order a gojek (online taxi app), but I don't dare confirm this. A ride to Kuta in South Lombok will cost around 400,000 IDR and probably about the same for Selong Belanak. On this page (geckoroutes.com) we share more information about it.
3. From Kuta you can take a taxi to Sengigi harbour and from there take the Eka Jaya ferry to Nusa Penida (bookaway.com).
4. From Nusa Penida, you can, if you like, easily continue on to Nusa Lembongan by local boat (20-30m) or head back to Bali (Sanur).

I would recommend securing the ferry tickets in advance. That way you avoid ending up having to wait for hours at the harbour for the next ferry (if it even still runs).

Wishing you a lovely trip, and I hope this advice was still in time!

Best wishes,

Maarten

Should I go from Gili Meno via Bagsal or take a direct ferry to Nusa?
Dominik · March 2023
Hello Maarte, hello Abegail, we have now been in Indonesia for almost 10 days, and have already made our first stops on Bali. We are now on Gili-Meno and want to stay a little longer. But the Nusa islands are planned as the next stop. To then finally arrive on the Bukit peninsula and at some point head back home again. Ok, the actual question would be: Does it make the most sense to go from Gili-Meno to Bagsal and then take a ferry there towards Nusa? We would like to manage the journey in one day … Kind regards, Lena and Dominik

Hi Lena and Dominik, I hope you're enjoying your Indonesia trip so far! You can just take the direct ferry from Gili Meno to Nusa Penida (bookaway.com). Although there's only one trip daily at 10:15, it takes only 1.5 hours between the two islands.

We only suggest going to Bangsal if you plan on visiting some spots in Lombok. Keep in mind that the ferry from Bangsal to Nusa Penida (geckoroutes.com) first goes to Padang Bai in Bali before continuing its journey to Nusa Penida. Safe travels!

What is the best way to reach Kuta, Lombok from Bali via Nusa Penida?
JAna · September 2022
Hi!My idea was to do Bali-Nusa Penida-Lombok-Gili-Bali. The problem is I can´t find any port open in Lombok near to Kuta (Lombok) which is the part I am more interested in. What would you recommend? Thanks!

Hi Jana, great travel plan! See here your options:

1) Many fast boats used to operate from Senggigi which is closer to Kuta Lombok. However, at the moment there is only one company (Eka Jaya) that resumed its operations from Bali to Senggigi (geckoroutes.com). Unfortunately, they don't operate from Nusa Penida. In theory, you could travel from Nusa Penida - Padang Bai - Senggigi - taxi to Kuta, but this will take much longer.

2) It's better to just book the ferry from Nusa Penida to Bangsal pier in the north of Lombok. From Senggigi to Kuta Lombok is 1.5 hour by car and from Bangsal it's 2 hours (only 30 minutes more).

3) There is also a port for slow ferries in the south west of Lombok (Lembor port (goo.gl)). From this harbour it's a 1 hour drive to Kuta Lombok, but it will be hard to find any transport options to Kuta Lombok. For that reason - and because it's a very slow ferry - we only recommend taking this ferry when you are travelling with a vehicle.

Another option is to adjust the route and travel this way (or in reverse):
1. Bali - Nusa Penida
2. Nusa Penida - Bangsal, Lombok - Gili Islands (only short boat drive)
3. Gili - Kuta Lombok
5. Fly from Lombok to Bali (Praya airport is only 30m drive from Kuta Lombok)

Safe travels!

Lombok to Nusa Penida by Direct Ferry

1h 25m - 5h 15mFrom $15 (270,000 IDR)

Taking a direct ferry is the most convenient way to travel from Lombok to Nusa Penida. You can complete the journey in just a little over an hour. It's also the cheapest option, with fares from $15 (270,000 IDR).

Most ferries operate directly between the two islands, but sometimes, they make a stop in Gili Air and/or Gili Trawangan. Check your booking beforehand to avoid surprises.

Departure ports in Lombok

Ferries depart from the two main piers in Lombok: Bangsal Pier and Senggigi Pier. Both ports are on the island’s west coast, but Senggigi Pier is more centrally located.

Senggigi Ferry Terminal is accessible if you are staying in Senggigi (Rinjani basecamp) or Lombok's tourist hub, Kuta, on the southern coast. The 10-minute taxi ride from Senggigi to Senggigi Pier should cost around $2.20 (40,000 IDR). From Kuta, fares start from $20 (350,000 IDR).

Bangsal Pier is on the northwest coast of Lombok and is closer to the Gili Islands. From Senggigi, it’s a 30 to 40-minute drive up north to Bangsal Pier. From Kuta, it’s about a 2-hour drive. The easiest way to get there is by private transfer, with fares from $6.40 (115,000 IDR) from Senggigi and $23 (400,000 IDR) from Kuta.

Arrival ports in Nusa Penida

In Nusa Penida, there are several piers, all located on the island’s northern coast. Some of these are Buyuk Harbour, Banjar Nyuh Harbour, Sampalan Port, and Toya Pakeh Harbour.

It's best to arrange your ride from the port to your hotel before you arrive. You can do this through your hotel, or by contacting a trusted driver beforehand. Alternatively, you can take an ojek (scooter) from the pier to your accommodation.

Lombok to Nusa Penida by Indirect Ferry

1h 45m - 8h 20mFrom $25 (445,000 IDR)

There are plenty of direct ferries operating from Lombok to Nusa Penida, but in case they are all fully booked, you can take an indirect one.

With an indirect ferry, you will take a boat from Lombok to Bali and take another ferry to Nusa Penida. It takes longer, and is also more expensive than buying a direct ferry ticket.

There are 2 routes you can take, via Padang Bai and via Sanur:

  • Via Padang Bai: Combined rates start from $32 (563,000 IDR) and travel time is around 2 hours

  • Via Sanur: Combined prices are from $31 (543,000 IDR) and the trip takes about 5 hours.

Note that the journey times mentioned are excluding the waiting time between the ferry trips.

Via Padang Bai or Sanur?

We recommend taking the ferry to Padang Bai because this is the closest harbour to Lombok. Just note that you need to take you'll need to take a ferry from Lombok to Bali before noon because the connecting ferry from Padang Bai departs at 13:30.

From Sanur, there are more departures to Nusa Penida. However, the travel time from Lombok to Sanur takes so much longer.

Via Serangan Pier

There are also ferry trips from Lombok to Serangan Pier in Bali, but the connecting ferries from Serangan to Nusa Penida depart in the early morning. This means you’ll have to stay the night in Bali when travelling via Serangan.

How to get to Bangsal Pier in Lombok

Bangsal Pier is a small port north of Lombok. It’s the main gateway from Lombok to the Gili Islands, as well as a common stopover for boats servicing the Nusa Penida – Bali – Lombok – Gili route.

From Senggigi

The easiest way to reach Bangsal Pier from your accommodation in Senggigi is by taxi. Taxi fares start at $6.40 (115,000 IDR) and the journey takes 30-40 minutes along the scenic coastal road.

Bluebird is the most reliable taxi company in Lombok. You can flag it down the street, book a car by phone (0370 627000) or hail a ride via a dedicated app.

Another option is to ask your hotel if they offer shared rides to Bangsal Pier. This will help save a few dollars, although the travel time will likely take a little longer.

From Kuta in South Lombok

From Kuta, there are no metered taxis such as BlueBird, but plenty of tour desks can arrange a private transfer. You can also inquire at your accommodation for a taxi.

Most taxis can accommodate up to four passengers, while larger cars or vans are available on request. Expect to pay at least $23 (400,000 IDR) for the 2-hour journey from Kuta to Bangsal Pier.
