The trains depart from two stations in Yogyakarta city centre: Tugu Station is within walking distance of Malioboro, while Lempuyangan Station is about 2 km away. Only economy seats are available at Lempuyangan, while you can book economy, executive and business classes from Tugu Station.
In Banyuwangi, trains arrive at Banyuwangi Kota Station, formerly known as Karangasem Station. From here, it’s a 15-minute taxi ride to the city centre. Fares start from $1.10 (20,000 IDR) with Grab. Motorcycle taxis are also available outside the train station.

Yogyakarta to Ijen by Bus to Banyuwangi
Long-distance buses operate from Yogyakarta to Banyuwangi daily. It's a longer journey compared to the train, though. And more expensive than an economy train seat.
Ticket prices start from $11 (195,000 IDR). The bus ride takes 14h - 14h 30m, and may take longer due to traffic and delays at scheduled rest stops.
We recommend taking the bus only when train tickets are sold out.
Departure and arrival station
Most buses depart from Terminal Giwangan, about 7 km from Malioboro in the city centre. You can get there by Grab, with fares from $2.20 (40,000 IDR).
In Banyuwangi, the most convenient drop-off point is at Banyuwangi Bus Stop in the city centre. Other arrival points include Terminal Brawijaya (3 km from the city centre) and Sri Tanjung Bus Terminal (13 km away).
The easiest way to get to your hotel is by booking a Grab taxi, with rates from $1.10 (20,000 IDR) from Terminal Brawijaya and $3.40 (60,000 IDR) from Sri Tanjung.

Yogyakarta to Ijen by Flight to Banyuwangi
Thinking of taking a flight from Yogyakarta to Ijen? It's possible to fly to Banyuwangi, but there are no direct flights on this route. All flights make one or two stopovers, and they can be quite expensive, with combined fares from $175 (3,090,000 IDR).
The usual layover is in Jakarta, and takes at least 12 hours. That's why we think this option is only worth considering if you're thinking of making a quick tour around Indonesia's capital.
Otherwise, it would make more sense to take a direct train from Yogyakarta to Ijen via Banyuwangi. It's a more interesting experience and produces far fewer emissions than a flight.
Flights to Banyuwangi are available only at the new Yogyakarta International Airport. You'll arrive at Banyuwangi Airport (formerly Blimbingsari Airport), about 20 km away from Banyuwangi city centre.

Step 1: How to get to Yogyakarta Airport
Yogyakarta International Airport is the city's primary airport, about 45 km away from the tourist centre in Malioboro. The most convenient way to get there is by train.
A ticket for a regular free-seating train costs $1.10 (20,000 IDR), and travel time is about 40 minutes. You can board the train at Tugu Station (Yogyakarta Station), within walking distance of Malioboro. The train's last stop is at YIA Train Station, which is connected to Yogyakarta International Airport.
Alternative options are a bus that costs $4.50 (80,000 IDR) and a taxi with rates from $13 (240,000 IDR). For private transfers, prices are similar whether you take a Grab/Gojek or book one in advance via Klook.
Heads up: by bus or taxi, the journey from the city centre to Yogyakarta International Airport takes 1.5 to 2 hours.

Step 2: Flight from Yogyakarta to Banyuwangi
There is no direct flight from Yogyakarta to Blimbingsari Airport. All flights include one or two stopovers. That's usually in Jakarta, but sometimes also in Surabaya.
Including the layover, the quickest flight takes 14.5 hours, while some flights with two layovers take up to 21 hours.
Airfares from Yogyakarta to Banyuwangi start from $170 (3,000,000 IDR).
Step 3: Banyuwangi Airport to Banyuwangi City Centre by Taxi
From Banyuwangi Airport to Banyuwangi city centre, you can hail a taxi outside the airport building. Fares start from $8.40 (150,000 IDR).
Grab offers cheaper rates, starting at $3.90 (70,000 IDR), but they are not allowed inside the airport terminal. You'll need to exit the gate and walk to the agreed pickup point.
Alternatively, you can take a DAMRI bus, which connects Banyuwangi Airport and Banyuwangi city centre for an affordable price. A ticket only costs around $2 (35,000 IDR).
However, bus departures are not that frequent. You might have to wait a while at the bus stop.

Why Visit Ijen?
Mt. Bromo and Mt. Ijen are two popular volcanoes in East Java. Both have their own charm - Bromo with its stunning views and Ijen with its blue fire. If you get the chance, we definitely recommend visiting both of these highlights in Java.
With a distance of 140 km between Bromo and Ijen, you can fit climbing both peaks in just 2 days. That's if you're in a hurry and don't get tired easily. If you have more time, you may want to include a visit to the nearby Sewu Waterfalls as well.
Note that to climb Mt. Ijen, you first have to get to Banyuwangi. Located 35 km away, it is the usual base camp for the so-called "mountain of fire" of Mount Ijen.

First things first. There are four common base camps for hiking Mt Bromo: Cemoro Lawang (next to the Bromo), Probolinggo (50 km northeast), Malang (55 km west), and Surabaya (125 km northwest). In short, if you're thinking of exploring Bromo and Ijen along with Sewu Waterfalls, Malang is your best bet. If you're only planning on visiting the volcanoes, we recommend that you stay in Cemoro Lawang.
