Departure and arrival station
There are two bus terminals in Venice – one on the island and another one on the mainland.
- If you’re departing from the main tourist area, the nearest bus station is in Tronchetto, located about 3 km west of San Marco. Note, though, that there are also lesser trips from Tronchetto to Milan.
- If you’re coming from the mainland, you can board the bus at Mestre Station. Buses departing from Mestre have convenient travel times and will give you more choices with the departure times.
All buses park at Lampugnano Bus Station, which is still 10 km away from Milan city centre. From here, you can take the Metro to get to almost anywhere in the city.

The train is an efficient way to travel from Venice to Milan.
There is at least one departure every hour from 05:57 to 18:09, so you can be flexible with your travel itinerary. Also, the train stations for both cities are accessible because they’re located within the tourist centre.
You can choose from three different kinds of trains:
- Regionale is the cheapest option with fares from $24 (€21). That’s half the price of high-speed trains and only an hour slower. Note that all regionale trains are indirect, and you’ll have to make one transfer at Verona Porta Nuova.
- Frecciarossa is the fastest option with a travel time of around 2.5 hours. It’s the most expensive with fares from $54 (€47). However, from 09:00, the only trips available are indirect trips that stop in Bologna Centrale. These trips take up to 3.5 hours and are more expensive at $80 (€70).
- Italo is high-speed like Frecciarossa, but privately owned. A ticket costs $25 (€22) for the 2.5-hour journey.
